The Angler

2 x4's, White Paint, 1/8" Hardboard Panel, Mannequin Arm and Legs, Steel Game Trap, Glass Diamond

2017

The Angler, overly dramatized and conceived with humor, uses satire to promote a conversation about the current social climate regarding dating and relationships. The materials used to create this work is where-in lies the conceptual execution. 1/8” hardboard panels and 2x4s set the stage for this exchange – the cheapest and most disposable materials to be purchased at the home improvement store – they can be quite deceiving. Similar to many people’s profiles on social media and dating apps such as Tinder. The male mannequin hand & forearm is made of thick but hollow, already white, plastic and is secured at 32 inches above the base – the average male inseam. The female mannequin legs are made of thin, but pliant, clear plastic and are painted the same basic-color white as the stage. There is a conversation to be had about the space between the “objects.” The red diamond in the hand is made of glass, this is used to represent a fake blood diamond. The object between the legs is a rusty, live, metal, small game trap. The trap could be seen as symbolic of the traditional relationship; perhaps this is due to the extreme evolution in gender roles rendering tradition irrelevant, rare, or outdated within our culture. Or, maybe it is symbolic of the amount of curating that goes into the “self” we choose to present to the world.
