Control Is An Illusion

Consumption

35 mm Black & White Film

2017

A title inspired by Sam Esmail’s Mr. Robot, this 35mm black and white film print provides a space for the viewer to contemplate exactly what it is that humans have control over. This style of straight photography illustrates the Romantic concept of the Sublime. The sharp angle of the log, an item altered by man but essentially made by nature, in relation to the nearly horizontal man-made palette is used to evoke the contrary drama of man versus nature. In addition, the textural element of the quick-burning palette in relation to the slow-burning log shows the resilience of nature as opposed to how easily dissolved our possessions really are. The smoke only covering a portion of the frame acts as a screen and perfectly supports the nature of our current cultural climate in that although we are capable of seeing the truth, we also have the option to dismiss it. All the while this fire is consuming everything it touches and because it is in the designated area, subtly referenced by the stone on the right, the viewer is provided with the illusion of safety and control. Here, fire is used to illustrate the duality of consumption.
